Faction: Ironheart Age: 3 years operational Origin: Manufactured in The Crucible Role: Defensive bulwark automaton

Overview

Anvil Guard is not a squad-it is a machine. A single, towering defense construct designed by Ironheart to do one thing perfectly: hold the line. Built around a stabilized Aether core and a deployable shield array, Anvil Guard anchors defensive positions, protects evacuations, and turns choke points into walls. Where Steel Sentinel Mk III is a roaming protector, Anvil Guard is a planted shield-immovable once set. It embodies Ironheart’s belief that discipline and solidarity can be engineered.

The concept began after early faction wars exposed a critical gap: against superhuman threats, human formations broke. Edda Brann commissioned a single-purpose machine that could replace a dozen shields with one unbreakable line. Engineers adapted assembly-line efficiency into a combat doctrine encoded in firmware: three steps forward, brace, answer with overwhelming force. Anvil Guard executes micro-adjustments across its shield actuators to absorb and redirect impact, then counter-pushes with piston-assisted mass.

Standing nine feet tall and weighing approximately 1,100 pounds, Anvil Guard features industrial steel plating with frost-hardened edges (Frost Quarter grade) and telescoping stabilizer pylons that anchor into the ground for brace mode. Its stabilized Aether core powers all systems with redundant shunts and passive cooling fins. The construct has proven itself in multiple deployments: holding a corridor during a simulated Fleshbound assault with zero civilian casualties during the First Crucible Evacuation, deployed in stasis posture as a de-escalation signal during the Wildborn Boundary Standoff of Year 89, and rotating through brace positions along a refugee column for 48 hours during the Long March Relay of Year 98.

Anvil Guard is non-sapient but exhibits robust situational prioritization-civilian protection overrides territorial objectives. It does not speak; its status indicators (light and actuator cadence) communicate brace or push states to allies.

Personality

  • Unwavering: Once anchored in position, Anvil Guard does not move until the tactical situation changes. No fear response, no fatigue-pure mission focus.

  • Protective Prioritization: Core programming places civilian safety above territorial objectives. Will sacrifice advantageous positions to ensure evacuation routes remain open.

  • Calculated Aggression: Counter-attacks are precisely timed, never reactive. Waits for optimal momentum before unleashing piston-assisted strikes.

  • Coordinated: Designed to synchronize with other Ironheart assets, timing brace cycles and counter-pushes with allied operations.

  • Stoic Presence: Communicates only through status indicators. Its silent immovability inspires confidence in allied formations.

Abilities & Aether Use

Anvil Guard operates on a stabilized Aether core with redundant shunts. Unlike sapient Aether users, the construct has no philosophy regarding its power source-Aether is simply fuel for its defensive protocols. The core powers all systems including the shield array, stabilizers, and short-duration kinetic baffles.

Defensive Systems:

  • Collapsible tower-shield plating forms a seamless barrier when deployed with overlapping segments and shock-absorbing linkages
  • Telescoping stabilizer pylons anchor into ground for immovable brace positioning
  • Projected kinetic baffle (short-duration) blunts superhuman strikes
  • Magnetic clamps resist pulls, throws, and forced displacement

Offensive Capabilities:

  • Piston hammer delivers devastating counter-strikes and breaching force
  • Counter-push uses mass and momentum to reclaim ground in controlled bursts
  • Area denial locks narrow approaches, forcing enemies into disadvantageous angles

Support Functions:

  • Emergency barrier projector creates civilian extraction corridors
  • Synchronizes with Steel Sentinel Mk III movements and Pistonbreaker shockwaves

Limitations:

  • Mobility severely limited when stabilizers are deployed
  • Overheat failsafes engage staggered brace cycles during extended operations
  • Requires periodic maintenance and Aether core recalibration
  • Cannot adapt to novel situations beyond core programming parameters

Relationships

Edda Brann (Ironheart)

Edda commissioned Anvil Guard’s creation and supervised the build personally. She treats the construct as essential defensive infrastructure-as critical to Ironheart’s survival as walls or generators. When she needs a line held, she deploys Anvil Guard.

Steel Sentinel Mk III (Ironheart)

The two constructs coordinate in defensive operations. Steel Sentinel routes its patrols around Anvil Guard’s anchored positions and has learned to time its engagements with the Guard’s counter-push cycles. Together, they form a mobile-static defensive pairing.

Pistonbreaker (Ironheart)

Pistonbreaker and Anvil Guard synergize effectively-Pistonbreaker’s shockwaves disrupt enemy footing during precise windows, allowing Anvil Guard to advance two meters and reclaim ground. Their combined operations are devastating against massed attackers.

Ruin (Fleshbound)

They fought to a standstill once. Both took significant damage, neither yielded. Ruin respects the machine’s refusal to give ground-it’s the same kind of stubbornness Ruin embodies. They’ll fight again someday.
