Pistonbreaker
Faction: Ironheart Age: 29 Origin: Elarion native Role: Anti-mage specialist
Overview
Real name: Kess Vann. Called Pistonbreaker after she dismantled a Fleshbound abomination with nothing but a piston rod from a broken engine. Kess is an anti-mage specialist. She doesn’t know why, but Aether-based abilities fail around her-not completely, but enough to disrupt casting, drain effectiveness, and create openings. Veilwalkers call it “null field resonance.” Kess calls it “making magic shut the fuck up.”
Kess grew up in the Frost Quarter’s industrial zones, daughter of a factory foreman. She learned to fight young-street brawls, faction conflicts, survival. What she didn’t learn was fear. At nineteen, during a Fleshbound raid, she found herself cornered by an abomination-a mass of muscle, tentacles, and exposed organs enhanced by extreme Aether consumption. It should have killed her in seconds.
Instead, its Aether-enhanced abilities flickered and failed. The tentacles that should have crushed steel barely dented her improvised armor. Kess grabbed a broken piston rod and beat it to death. Took forty minutes. She didn’t stop until it was pulp. Afterward, Veilwalker observers noted her “null field”-Aether abilities diminish near her. Kess noted that magic is bullshit and she’s the antidote.
Ten years later, she’s Ironheart’s premier anti-mage specialist. Send her against supernatural threats. She’ll make them conventional, then she’ll make them dead.
Personality
- Aggressive: Kess believes the best defense is a relentless offense, charging headlong into fights before opponents can prepare their supernatural tricks.
- Crude: She doesn’t waste words on politeness or diplomacy, preferring blunt honesty and profanity to social niceties.
- Fearless: She runs toward things that terrify others, finding the supernatural worthy of contempt rather than terror.
- Practical: She favors simple solutions violently applied, cutting through complexity with direct action and improvised weapons.
- Anti-supernatural: She harbors a deep hatred for magic, mutation, and anything unnatural, viewing Aether-users as cheaters who deserve to have their crutches kicked away.
Abilities & Aether Use
Kess represents a unique anomaly in Elarion-a living antithesis to Aether itself. While others consume and channel the substance for power, her very presence disrupts it. Veilwalkers theorize she possesses natural Aether counter-resonance, her bio-electric field creating interference patterns that destabilize Aether flow. This is possibly a one-in-a-million occurrence. What’s certain is that she views Aether as a crutch for the weak, and she takes savage pleasure in kicking it away.
Aether Consumption: None-refuses on principle
Unique Ability: Null Field Resonance
- Aether-based abilities fail or weaken near her
- Not complete nullification-disruption and drain
- Effective range: ~20 feet with focus
- Affects: Veilwalker magic, enhanced abilities, channeling
- Less effective on: Permanent mutations, constructs
- Unconscious ability-she can’t turn it off
- Stronger when she focuses on specific target
- Draining for her (headaches, exhaustion after extended use)
Combat Style
- Direct, brutal, relentless approach
- Uses improvised weapons (wrenches, pipes, piston rods)
- Closes distance fast to enter null field range
- Beats opponents until abilities or they fail
Limitations
- Cannot control the null field consciously
- Extended use causes headaches and exhaustion
- Less effective against permanent mutations and constructs
- Cannot completely nullify Aether-only disrupt and drain
Relationships
Edda Brann (Ironheart)
The Forge Mother trained Kess personally, recognizing her null field potential before anyone else understood what it meant. Edda saw not just a natural anti-mage but a weapon that could protect Ironheart from supernatural threats. Kess’s loyalty to her trainer runs bone-deep-one of the few people she actually respects and listens to without argument.
Aras Nox (Nocturne)
Despite faction differences, Kess and the shadow operative collaborate on anti-ability tactics and share techniques for countering supernatural threats. Their professional respect is built on mutual effectiveness-both specialists who excel at neutralizing enhanced opponents. Aras appreciates that Kess’s null field makes his stealth work easier, while Kess respects anyone who fights smart rather than relying on magic.
Mara Vex (Nocturne)
A fierce competitive rivalry exists between these elite fighters, their very different styles creating spectacular clashes during faction conflicts. Mara’s assassin precision against Kess’s brawler brutality-they’ve fought multiple times with neither claiming decisive victory. Both secretly look forward to their next encounter.
Kor Emmer (Ironheart)
Fought alongside the mutated Ironheart member during a Silvertongue ambush, earning mutual respect despite Kess’s instinctive dislike of mutations. Kor proved his loyalty with actions rather than words, and Kess’s null field actually reduced his mutation’s pain during the battle. An awkward alliance built on battlefield trust.
Thaddeus Iron (Ironheart)
The master smith forges Kess’s improvised weapons and reinforces them to survive her brutal combat style. She respects his no-nonsense craftsmanship-he makes things that work without supernatural enhancement. Thaddeus finds her refreshingly straightforward compared to clients who want flashy enchantments.
Kerra Vault (Ironheart)
Collaborated on fortress designs with anti-magic features integrated throughout. Kess provides practical testing of Aether-resistant materials by simply walking near them-if they still function in her null field, they’ll work against enemy Aether users.
Vera Cask (Ironheart)
Fellow enforcer who handles containment from the physical side while Kess handles the supernatural side. They’ve worked operations together before—Pistonbreaker shuts down the magic, Vera seals the breach—and they make an effective team built on shared preference for action over discussion. Neither socialises with the other, but they trust each other in the field without question, which in both their worlds is worth considerably more than friendship.
Lithek (Wildborn)
Views the Wildborn martial artist as a worthy rival-both pure fighters who rely on skill rather than supernatural power. Different philosophies but similar commitment to physical excellence. Kess wants to fight him properly someday, no factions, no stakes-just to see who’s better.

- Enhanced Raider (Year 95): Negated Aether-enhanced strength, defeated the raider with a standard wrench
- Silvertongue Saboteur (Year 97): Hex’s tech worked but his backup Aether powers didn’t-Kess made the difference
