The Aether System
Aether is both the cause of Elarion's destruction and the key to its survival. In-game, it drives every strategic decision — from card costs to Power and Damage boosts to faction clan bonuses.
What is Aether?
When the nexus beneath Elarion erupted, it released Aether — raw magical energy that permeated every corner of the city. Aether is invisible to most but felt by all. It warps physics, mutates flesh, powers technology, and distorts reality itself.
In the years since the Fall, every faction has found ways to harness Aether for their own purposes. Ironheart channels it through mechanical augmentations. Wildborn absorbs it through biological mutation. Veilwalkers shape it through sheer will. And Fleshbound… weaponizes it through sacrifice.
Core Concepts
Aether Crystals
Raw Aether crystallizes in deposits throughout Elarion. These crystals are the primary energy source, currency, and power amplifier in the post-Fall world. Every faction harvests and processes them differently.
Aether Saturation
Prolonged exposure to concentrated Aether mutates organic tissue. Low saturation grants minor abilities. High saturation transforms the body and mind irreversibly. The Fleshbound embrace this; others fear it.
Aether Channeling
The Veilwalkers discovered that trained individuals can channel raw Aether through their bodies, shaping reality itself. This requires years of training and carries enormous risk — channeling too much can shatter the mind.
Reality Thinning
In areas of extreme Aether concentration, the fabric of reality grows thin. Physics becomes unreliable. Time distorts. Space folds. The Veil Academy exists in one such zone, using the instability as a feature rather than a flaw.
Aether in Gameplay
The Aether system translates the lore into deep, strategic gameplay mechanics.
Aether Pool
Each player starts with 12 Aether. Every card has an Aether cost to play. You decide when to spend it — play conservatively or go all-in early. Once it's gone, it's gone.
Power & Damage
Every card has Power (determines who wins the round) and Damage (life lost by the loser). Aether can boost a card's Power or Damage mid-round using Power Boost and Damage Boost.
Clan Bonuses
Play two or more cards from the same faction to trigger their clan bonus — a passive ability that activates automatically. Each faction's bonus reflects its strategic identity.
Cross-Faction Decks
Mix factions for versatile strategies, but you'll miss out on clan bonuses. A focused faction deck rewards synergy; a mixed deck rewards unpredictability.
Faction Playstyles
Every faction brings a distinct strategic identity to deck building. Master one, or blend many.
Nocturne's clan bonus increases your Damage by 2. Hit harder when you commit — ideal for aggressive players who want to punish every round they win.
Ironheart's clan bonus reduces the opponent's Damage by 2 (minimum 1). Absorb punishment and outlast your opponent through sheer durability.
Wildborn's clan bonus increases your Power by 2. Win more rounds by overpowering opponents — brute strength rewarded through faction loyalty.
Veilwalkers' clan bonus grants 2 Life when you win a round. Sustain through the match and punish opponents who can't finish you off.
Silvertongue's clan bonus reduces opponent's Power by 2 (minimum 1). Weaken your rival's ability to win rounds — control through subtraction.
Fleshbound's clan bonus stops the opponent's clan bonus from activating. Shut down synergies and force opponents to fight without their faction's edge.
