Ossian Graves - “The Corpse Whisperer”

Faction: Nocturne
Age: 54
Origin: Elarion native
Role: Forensic specialist and unofficial Night Market coroner

Overview

Ossian Graves reads crime scenes the way others read books. Every body tells a story, every wound reveals intent, every trace of Aether whispers the truth of what happened. In the Night Market’s morally gray ecosystem, he serves as the last honest thing—an investigator who cannot be bought, bribed, or intimidated, because he serves the dead rather than the living.

Born in Year 46, Ossian was a child during the chaotic decades before faction stabilization. He watched bodies pile up in the streets, victims of Aether mutations, faction violence, and simple human cruelty. While others looked away, young Ossian looked closer. He wanted to understand. By the time he was twenty, he’d developed an intuitive sense for reading death scenes that bordered on the supernatural. By thirty, he’d refined it into a systematic methodology that combined traditional forensics with Aether-sensitive analysis.

Kade Moros discovered Ossian’s talents in Year 79 when a series of murders threatened Night Market stability. Every faction blamed every other faction, and the resulting tensions could have ignited full-scale war. Ossian examined the scenes and identified the true killer within three days—a lone actor with no faction affiliation, seeking to profit from the chaos. The revelation defused the crisis, and Kade offered Ossian permanent employment as Nocturne’s forensic investigator.

For twenty-five years, Ossian has served as the Night Market’s unofficial coroner and truth-finder. When faction disputes escalate to violence and accusations fly, he examines the evidence and delivers verdicts that all parties must accept—because his reputation for incorruptible accuracy is beyond question. He takes no sides, shows no favor, and fears no powerful enemy. The dead cannot be threatened, and neither can he.

Personality

  • Incorruptible: No amount of money, power, or threat can sway his conclusions; he serves truth as embodied in the evidence, nothing more.
  • Melancholic: Decades of examining violent death have left him somber and contemplative, finding little joy in the living world.
  • Patient: Truth reveals itself slowly to those who know how to wait and observe; he never rushes an investigation.
  • Detached: His professional distance protects him psychologically but makes personal relationships difficult to maintain.
  • Precise: Every word he speaks in professional capacity is measured and accurate; he never speculates beyond what evidence supports.

Beyond his professional demeanor, Ossian carries a deep grief for Elarion’s violence—not anger, but sorrow at how much suffering people inflict upon each other. He drinks alone in his quarters, speaks to the dead as if they can hear him, and sleeps poorly. The weight of his work would have broken most people. It has worn Ossian down to essential elements—duty, precision, and an unshakeable commitment to speaking for those who can no longer speak for themselves.

Abilities & Aether Use

Ossian’s forensic abilities combine traditional investigative methodology with subtle Aether sensitivity. He doesn’t use Aether actively—rather, decades of exposure have given him passive perceptual enhancements that make him supernaturally effective at his work.

Death Scene Analysis:

  • Reads wounds to determine weapon type, attacker positioning, and intent
  • Detects Aether residue patterns that reveal what abilities were used
  • Reconstructs sequences of events through physical evidence
  • Identifies faction-specific techniques by their characteristic signatures

Aether Trace Perception:

  • Sees lingering Aether signatures invisible to normal vision
  • Distinguishes between faction Aether patterns by color and intensity
  • Detects temporal disturbances left by Veilwalker abilities
  • Perceives transformation residue from Fleshbound involvement

Psychological Reconstruction:

  • Determines victim’s final emotional state from physical indicators
  • Reads killer’s psychology through their methods and choices
  • Identifies revenge killings versus professional executions versus accidents
  • Reconstructs relationships between killer and victim through evidence alone

Limitations:

  • Not combat-capable; relies entirely on Nocturne protection
  • Analysis requires time; cannot work under pressure without reduced accuracy
  • Aether trace perception causes persistent headaches and visual disturbances
  • Cannot determine truth if evidence has been thoroughly contaminated or destroyed
  • Emotional toll of work requires isolation and recovery periods between investigations

Relationships

Kade Moros (Nocturne)

Kade is Ossian’s employer, protector, and closest thing to a friend. Twenty-five years of professional collaboration have created mutual respect bordering on affection, though neither would describe it that way. Kade values Ossian’s incorruptibility as a stabilizing force in the Night Market—his verdicts are accepted because everyone knows they cannot be purchased. Ossian appreciates that Kade has never once attempted to influence his conclusions, respecting the integrity that makes his work meaningful.

Vespa Noir (Nocturne)

Professional collaboration when deaths involve alchemical substances. Vespa’s expertise in chemical compounds complements Ossian’s forensic methodology, and they’ve worked numerous cases together. Ossian finds her clinical detachment refreshing—she approaches death with the same professional distance he does, without the moralizing that others bring to violent scenes.

Umbra 77 (Nocturne)

Ossian has examined Umbra 77’s work numerous times without ever meeting the assassin. He’s developed deep respect for their professionalism—clean kills, minimal suffering, no collateral damage. When Ossian identifies an Umbra kill, he notes it and moves on; there’s nothing to investigate because nothing was hidden. The assassin’s consistency makes his job easier.

Gavin Dredge (Nocturne)

Gavin occasionally provides security for Ossian during sensitive investigations. They share a comfortable silence during these assignments—neither feels the need to fill quiet with conversation. Ossian appreciates Gavin’s lack of curiosity about his methods, while Gavin respects that Ossian’s work keeps Night Market disputes from escalating into chaos.

Neriah (Veilwalkers)

A complicated professional relationship. Neriah speaks to the dead directly, while Ossian reads what the dead leave behind. Their methods sometimes produce complementary insights, but Ossian is privately skeptical of information that cannot be verified through physical evidence. They’ve collaborated when cases required both approaches, maintaining mutual respect despite philosophical differences about the nature of truth.

Sahri (Wildborn)

Sahri’s blood magic and healing work sometimes intersects with Ossian’s forensic analysis—she heals while he investigates what caused the wounds. They’ve encountered each other at violent scenes where survivors needed treatment while evidence needed preservation. An unspoken protocol exists: Sahri stabilizes the living, Ossian documents the dying, and neither interferes with the other’s work.

Scalpel (Fleshbound)

Ossian has examined victims of Scalpel’s work—subjects who escaped mid-transformation, or bodies recovered from failed procedures. Her handiwork is distinctive enough that he can identify it by surgical style alone. He’s documented her techniques extensively, not for prosecution (Nocturne doesn’t prosecute) but because understanding her methods helps him reconstruct what happened to victims. She’s aware of his attention and finds it professionally flattering.
