Gloom Shade

Faction: Nocturne (bonded to Aras Nox) Age: Unknown Origin: Aether-mutated creature Role: Hunter and tracker

Overview

Not human. Never was. Gloom Shade is something that crawled out of the deeper ruins, a creature born from Aether saturation and darkness given predatory form. It resembles a large hound made of living shadow, with eyes that reflect purple light. Aras Nox found the creature injured during a hunt in the Median’s sub-levels. Rather than kill it, he treated its wounds. The Shade bonded to him-not as a pet, but as an equal.

The deeper ruins beneath the Median are places most avoid. The Aetherfall’s effects concentrated there, creating zones where reality thins and mutations run rampant. Something in those depths created the Gloom Shade-or perhaps the Shade has always existed, waiting for Aether to give it form. Aras found it bleeding from multiple wounds, cornered by Fleshbound hunters. He drove them off and, for reasons he still doesn’t fully understand, treated the creature’s injuries instead of finishing it. The Shade watched him with intelligent eyes, accepted his help, and followed him out of the ruins.

It’s been by his side for three years. It hunts alongside Nocturne operatives, tracks Aether signatures across the city, and intimidates enemies with its mere presence. It understands human speech but doesn’t speak. Some believe it’s semi-sentient. Others think it’s smarter than it lets on.

Personality (As Observed)

  • Loyal: The Shade is bonded to Aras Nox absolutely, following him by choice rather than command and demonstrating unwavering devotion in all circumstances.
  • Patient: Can wait motionless for hours when hunting, displaying the predatory stillness of an apex ambush hunter that outlasts its prey.
  • Intelligent: Understands complex instructions and shows problem-solving capability, leading many to believe it’s far smarter than a typical creature.
  • Protective: Guards Aras and his allies with fierce dedication, positioning itself between danger and those it considers under its watch.
  • Curious: Shows surprising interest in artwork, music, and other non-violent stimuli, suggesting depths of perception beyond mere predatory instinct.

The Shade communicates through posture and body language, subtle vocalizations (growls, huffs, rumbles), an unsettling tendency to appear exactly where needed, and eye color changes (purple when calm, red when aggressive).

Abilities & Aether Nature

The Gloom Shade represents Aether in its most primal form-darkness given purpose and predatory will. It doesn’t channel Aether like humans; it is Aether, a living manifestation of shadow and void energy that coalesced into sentient form in the deep ruins where reality grows thin. Its very existence demonstrates that Aether can spontaneously generate consciousness when concentrated in sufficient quantity, making it both a wonder and a warning about the transformative power that saturates Elarion.

Aether Constitution: The Shade is made of Aether-saturated shadow. It’s not fully physical in the traditional sense.

Primary Abilities:

  • Shadow Movement: Can move through darkness as if it were liquid
  • Aether Tracking: Senses Aether signatures from miles away
  • Physical Form: Can solidify to attack or interact
  • Intimidation: Presence alone breaks lesser enemies’ morale
  • Night Vision: Sees perfectly in total darkness

Combat Capability:

  • Razor-sharp claws and teeth
  • Can phase through attacks (when not solidified)
  • Superhuman strength when manifested
  • Silent movement even when solid

Limitations:

  • Bright light weakens it
  • Cannot maintain solid form indefinitely
  • Vulnerable to Aether-disruption abilities
  • Requires periodic exposure to high-Aether environments

Relationships

Aras Nox (Nocturne)

Bonded partner. The Shade follows Aras by choice, not command. They hunt together, fight together, and understand each other without words. Their bond transcends the typical master-pet dynamic-Aras treats the Shade as an equal, and the creature responds with absolute loyalty. When Aras is threatened, the Shade becomes a force of pure protective violence.

Kade Moros (Nocturne)

The Night Market’s leader tolerates the Shade’s presence in his domain. It’s unusual to allow such a creature into Nocturne’s heart, but Aras vouches for its behavior. Kade has watched the Shade prove itself time and again, though he maintains a cautious awareness that such a creature operates by instincts no human fully understands.

Ironheart (Faction)

Ironheart operatives view the Shade with suspicion. They don’t trust mutated creatures, even intelligent ones. The Shade has proven itself in joint operations, but tension remains. Ironheart’s preference for order and predictability clashes with accepting a creature of pure Aether chaos into their battle lines.

Wildborn (Faction)

The Wildborn respect the Shade as kin-another creature changed by Aether. Kor Emmer in particular acknowledges it as a fellow evolved being. Where others see a monster, the Wildborn see a natural progression of life adapting to Elarion’s transformed reality. They treat it with the reverence given to any apex predator.

Fleshbound (Faction)

The Fleshbound want to capture and study it. The Shade kills Fleshbound on sight-it remembers who hunted it when it was wounded and alone. This hatred runs deep, an instinctual fury that overrides even Aras’s attempts at tactical restraint when Fleshbound agents appear.
