Reverie
Harvests secrets from sleeping minds; the city's dreams are vaults she walks through nightly.
Reverie - “The Dream Harvester”
Faction: Nocturne
Age: 31
Origin: Elarion native
Role: Dream-walker and subconscious intelligence operative
Overview
Reverie is Nocturne’s most unconventional intelligence asset—a woman who harvests secrets from the sleeping minds of Elarion’s citizens. Born in Year 69 to a family of Median traders, she discovered her unusual sensitivity to Aether during adolescence when she began experiencing other people’s dreams as vividly as her own. What started as a curse became her profession.
Where Rook Ashwell steals memories from the surface of sleeping minds, Reverie goes deeper. She walks through dreamscapes, navigating the symbolic architecture of the subconscious to find truths that people hide even from themselves. Her targets never know they’ve been compromised—they simply wake with a lingering sense of unease and no memory of the pale woman who walked through their nightmares.
Reverie operates from a cramped apartment in the Median’s densest residential block, where the dreams of hundreds press against her consciousness every night. She has learned to filter them, to choose which minds to enter and which secrets are worth the psychological toll. Kade Moros pays her well for intelligence that cannot be obtained any other way, though even he finds her methods unsettling.
The work has changed her. Extended time in other people’s subconscious minds has blurred the boundaries of her own identity. She sometimes forgets which memories are hers and which belong to her targets. She speaks in fragments of other people’s thoughts and occasionally answers questions before they’re asked. Those who meet her describe an ethereal presence that seems only partially anchored to waking reality.
Personality
- Detached: Years of walking through other people’s minds have separated her from normal human connection, leaving her observing life more than participating in it.
- Insightful: She perceives truths that others miss, reading body language and subtext with uncanny accuracy even while awake.
- Melancholic: Carrying fragments of countless nightmares has left a permanent sadness in her, an awareness of how much pain people carry beneath their waking masks.
- Patient: Dream-walking requires waiting for the right moment when the target’s subconscious defenses lower, teaching her that the best intelligence comes to those who wait.
- Fragmented: Her sense of self has become porous, occasionally manifesting as confusion about her own memories or speaking in other people’s voices.
Abilities & Aether Use
Reverie’s relationship with Aether is innate rather than learned. She was born with unusual Aether sensitivity that manifests specifically in connection to sleeping minds. Rather than consuming Aether for enhancement, she channels the ambient Aether that flows through the Median to bridge the gap between waking and dreaming consciousness.
Dream-Walking:
- Enters the dreams of sleeping targets within her physical proximity
- Navigates dreamscape symbolism to locate hidden memories and secrets
- Can influence dream content subtly without waking the target
- Extracts information that the conscious mind has suppressed or forgotten
Subconscious Reading:
- Perceives emotional undercurrents in waking conversation
- Detects lies through subtle tells that bypass conscious deception
- Occasionally receives flashes of insight from nearby sleeping minds
Limitations:
- Must be physically close to targets (within the same building)
- Cannot enter the dreams of Aether-enhanced individuals without extreme difficulty
- Extended dream-walking causes psychological degradation and identity confusion
- Completely vulnerable while her consciousness is elsewhere
- Cannot control what she finds—some secrets are traumatic to witness
Relationships
Kade Moros (Nocturne)
Kade is Reverie’s primary employer and the only person who truly understands the value of her unusual talents. He discovered her working small-time dream cons in Year 92 and immediately recognized her potential for intelligence gathering. Their relationship is professional but carries an undercurrent of mutual respect—Kade pays generously and never asks her to enter dreams that might break her, while she provides intelligence that no other operative could obtain. She finds his mind fascinating in the rare moments she’s sensed its edges: disciplined, compartmentalized, and surprisingly lonely.
Rook Ashwell (Nocturne)
A professional rivalry tempered by mutual understanding of what it costs to violate sleeping minds. Rook’s memory theft operates on the surface while Reverie goes deeper, making them complementary rather than competitive in practice. They occasionally share techniques and warnings about particularly dangerous targets. Rook is one of the few people who doesn’t find her unsettling—he understands the isolation that comes with their work.
Luna Veil (Veilwalkers)
A complicated relationship that began when Luna detected Reverie’s presence in someone else’s dream. The Veilwalker dream architect and the Nocturne dream-walker share territory in the sleeping world, and their paths cross more often than either faction would prefer. They’ve developed an unspoken non-aggression pact in dreamspace, though their methods and purposes differ fundamentally—Luna builds and protects, while Reverie observes and extracts.
Vespa Noir (Nocturne)
Reverie occasionally provides intelligence about targets’ psychological vulnerabilities that Vespa exploits through her chemical manipulation. Their collaboration is efficient but cold—Vespa finds Reverie’s ethereal demeanor off-putting, while Reverie has seen enough of Vespa’s handiwork in nightmares to maintain careful distance.
