Ravager of Briar Row
Claws inked with soot; hunts between streetlamps where packs still remember songs.
Ravager of Briar Row
Faction: Wildborn Age: Unknown Origin: Mutated Elarion native Role: Elder hunter and territorial guardian
Overview
The Ravager is what happens when someone spends decades in the Verdant Sprawl without protection. Originally human-possibly. Now something else. Covered in bark-like plates, with claws that can shred steel and senses that detect Aether concentrations from miles away. The Ravager doesn’t remember their original name or life. They are pure instinct, ancient wisdom, and primal fury made manifest.
No one knows who the Ravager was before. They don’t remember. They don’t speak in human language anymore-only low, rumbling songs in what might be pre-human tongue or might be madness given voice. What’s known: they’ve been in the Sprawl for at least sixty years. They’ve survived longer than anyone else in that environment. The mutations that would kill others strengthened them. What would drive others mad became their new reality.
Kor Emmer respects the Ravager as an elder, though they’re more force of nature than person. They hunt, patrol Wildborn territory, and sing their strange songs. Packs follow them during dangerous hunts, learning by observation. Despite their fearsome reputation, the Ravager has never harmed a Wildborn or innocent civilian. They hunt only intruders, mutated predators, and Fleshbound abominations. They remember something-not who they were, but what they protect.
Abilities & Aether Use
The Ravager represents the extreme end of Wildborn Aether philosophy-complete merger with the Sprawl’s living essence over decades of exposure. They channel Aether not through conscious direction but through pure instinct, their body having become a conduit for the land’s primal power. Where other Wildborn maintain some separation between themselves and their mutations, the Ravager has become one with the ancient forest itself.
Mutations
- Bark-Like Plates: Natural armor covering most of body
- Steel-Rending Claws: Can tear through metal and stone
- Aether Senses: Detect concentrations from miles away
- Enhanced Strength: Superhuman, possibly beyond measurement
- Regeneration: Heals from wounds that would kill others
- Agelessness: Time affects them differently-possibly immortal
The Songs
The Ravager sings. Low, rumbling songs that echo through the Sprawl. No one understands the words-if there are words. Wildborn theories:
- Ancient Language: Pre-human or pre-Aetherfall tongue
- Aether Communication: Speaking to the Sprawl itself
- Memory Fragments: What remains of who they were
- Madness Given Voice: No meaning, just sound
Veilwalkers who’ve studied the songs report feeling the Veil thin when the Ravager sings. As if something beyond is listening.
Limitations
The Ravager’s transformation is complete and irreversible, leaving them unable to communicate in human language or integrate into normal society. Their instinctive nature means they cannot strategize or cooperate in complex operations, only react to threats through primal understanding.
Personality
- Protective: The Ravager guards Wildborn territory with absolute commitment, defending the Sprawl against any threat with unwavering dedication.
- Ancient: They move with the weight of decades of experience, their every action carrying the gravity of one who has witnessed countless seasons pass.
- Instinctive: The Ravager no longer thinks in human patterns, operating purely on primal understanding and natural impulse rather than rational thought.
- Selective: Despite their fearsome reputation, they distinguish between genuine threats and innocents with uncanny accuracy, never harming those who mean no harm.
- Mysterious: Their motivations remain unknowable to others, yet their actions follow a consistent pattern that suggests deeper purpose beyond comprehension.
Relationships
Kor Emmer (Wildborn)
Kor Emmer respects the Ravager as an elder hunter, one of the few Wildborn who can approach them safely. The pack leader recognizes the ancient wisdom in the Ravager’s actions and has learned to read their movements and songs for warnings about territory and threats. Their relationship is one of mutual respect between two apex presences in the Sprawl.
Nyra (Wildborn)
The Ravager fought alongside Nyra against a Silvertongue expedition attempting to harvest rare flora from deep Sprawl territory. During this encounter, the Ravager recognized something in Nyra’s songs-perhaps an echo of the ancient melodies they themselves sing. This connection suggests the Ravager may respond to certain forms of music or sound on a primal level.
Thorn Stalker (Wildborn)
The Ravager and Thorn Stalker exist as territorial rivals, both apex predators claiming dominion over portions of the Sprawl. They compete for hunting grounds and recognition but never fight seriously-there’s an unspoken understanding between ancient hunters that the Sprawl is large enough for both. Their rivalry pushes each to greater vigilance.
Fleshbound (Fleshbound)
The Fleshbound desperately want to capture and study the Ravager, viewing their successful long-term mutation as the key to perfecting their own transformations. Multiple expeditions have attempted to take the Ravager alive-all have failed catastrophically. The Ravager kills Fleshbound on sight, seemingly recognizing them as abominations against the natural order they protect.
